Interview tips

A personal interview plays the most important role to get the desired job and, on the other hand, the employer judges your thinking, knowledge, and interpersonal behavior on the basis of personal interview. Personal interview unfolds the personality and attitude of the job seeker before the interviewer. The survey suggests that the average time taken in an interview is 40 minutes. Thus, one has to be very careful while preparing for interviews and must abide by following guidelines.

Before Interview

  • Introspect yourself and find out major strength and weakness, it is better to take the help of SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threats) analysis.
  • Go through the details of the employer like market position, size, turnover, product specifications, and the latest news of employer in the media.
  • Prepare yourself to solve puzzles which can be asked in the technical interview. Some recommended books are Shakuntala Devi’s puzzles George W. Summer’s brain teasers etc.
  • Collect the job specifications like roles and responsibility under specific job, salary, and compensation offered etc. It’s a good idea to keep some smart queries to be asked to the interviewer at the end of the interview such as, why your company recently merged with company ‘X’ while there is one more company ‘y’ with same profile?
  • If you have any relative/ alumni in that company, then try to consult with them about the company culture and take the necessary advice prior facing the interview.
  • Write down the challenges that attract you to face the job. Strive hard to correlate your strengths with those challenges.
  • Build up confidence: That’s the key to success; otherwise, all of your preparation will be wasted. Read famous motivational books like “You Can Win” before the interview. Introspect yourself to find your goal of life.
  • If you have any break during your academic pursuance, then be ready with a sincere explanation to it.
  • You should be ready to have the queries based upon your resume like: about your project, achievements, hobbies etc.
  • Be ready with some proven examples of your skills, e.g., where you worked in a team, resolved a conflict, solved a big problem, led a group, organized some events etc.
Don't forget to carry following items while going for an interview:

  • Neat and clean copies of your resume/ CV.
  • Original necessary documents and some sets of photocopies of the same.
  • Latest passport sized photographs.
  • References and letters of recommendations, wherever necessary.
  • White blank papers and good quality pen.

During Interview

Remember that the First impression is the last impression. Therefore, here are some guidelines to be followed during the interview:
  • Be punctual: Arrive before the scheduled time and wait for your turn
  • Shake hand properly: When introduced to the interviewer, have a firm, but not painful, handshake with a pleasant smile. Repeat the same actions after completing interview too.
  • Eye contact: make eye contacts when you talk with the interviewer, don’t look at other places.
  • Posture: Have good posture when sitting or standing. Don’t behave in a loose manner or put hands on the table.
  • Confidence is the key: stay relaxed and calm while entering the interview room and interacting with interviewers; remember, don’t be overconfident.
  • Be optimistic: behave optimistically in the interview don’t talk about any negative activity.

Closing an Interview

At the end of an interview, it is good to ask the interviewer when they will take a final hiring decision or what will be the next step of the hiring process.  It’s a smart idea to ask the interviewer for a business card to follow up for the results of the interview.  Shake hands with the employer and again ensure them how your qualification and skills match the job and you will do your best in this. If your interview was good enough you can ask the interviewer "Is there anything else I can answer for you to make a hiring decision?" In the end, give thanks to the interviewer. Once you returned home, send a thanks email to the interviewers.

Technical Interview

Professionals like engineering graduates, MCA, science graduates etc. have to face technical interview which judges the subject knowledge of the candidates. And, it’s beyond the scope of this guide to cover all the sample questions; nevertheless, the most of the questions concentrate on final year’s projects and internship. Other questions may be like what are your favorite subjects? And what are the subjects you dislike?  It is recommended to prepare some of the core subjects for the technical interview and revise all the basic concepts of your project. The interviewer can ask some puzzles also at the time of interview to check the analytical skills of the candidate. There are many books available in the market to prepare for puzzles and quizzes. Surendra Choudhary, working at Jaipur based IT Company says that generally technical interview is followed by written tests. In his interview, the interviewer asked him questions based upon the problems given in written test, he adds.
Amit Jethwani, selected by Tech Mahindra Company in a pool campus drive, says that the interviewer assembled 10-12 candidates in a room for a technical interview. Then, interviewer inquired about his final year’s project and asked rest of the candidates to fire queries upon him. Interviewer repeated this pattern for all the candidates.

As and when you get a chance; try to bring the interviewer on your major strengths or achievements where you can prove yourself effective. Remember, if you feel that you are losing the game, or you are not fulfilling the immediate requirements of the employer. Try to convince interviewers that you are a quick learner so compensate the shortcoming found during an interview in a very short span of time.
